Tic-Tac-Toe Strategy: Beat the Balanced XO Bot

Practice winning lines, blocks and forks against a beatable tic-tac-toe computer opponent.

Understand the board

You play X and the computer plays O on a three-by-three grid. Complete a row, column or diagonal of three matching marks to win. Each player places one mark on an empty square. A full board without a winning line is a draw. Choose New round to clear the board while keeping the visible session counters.

Look for the urgent move

Before choosing a square, check whether you can complete three in a row now. If you cannot, look for a line where O already has two marks and an empty third square. Blocking that line is often more important than starting a new plan. The center participates in four winning lines, while each corner participates in three.

Create a fork

A fork gives you two different winning threats on your next turn. Your opponent can normally block only one. Try to find a position where one new X creates two lines containing two X marks and one empty square. Check that O does not have an immediate win before spending a move on this tactic.

A fair, beatable opponent

The balanced bot takes an immediate winning move if it has one. Otherwise it usually calculates a strong move but sometimes chooses a random legal square. That creates genuine opportunities without handing over every round. Wins earn 100 rating points, draws 60 and losses 0; the dashboard averages completed rounds.
